2014 saw the retirement from the editorial board of two of the founding members of Crime, histoire & sociétés/Crime, History & Societies. Pieter Spierenburg and Clive Emsley were both among the pioneers in the field of the history of crime and criminal justice. As many readers will know, their contributions to the field go well beyond their significance as prolific researchers and writers, Pieter with his ground breaking studies on the early modern carceral institutions : on violence, on masculinity and honour culture and Clive as the pioneer of studies of policing, in Britain, Europe and beyond from the 18th to the 20th centuries.

Together with a few colleagues, Pieter and Clive were instrumental in transforming crime and criminal justice history from a marginal concern of social historians, into an established and thriving interdisciplinary field between history, criminology and cultural studies.
